Collecting ISC Data

Collecting ISC Data

The ISC was developed using information that could be easily understood, collected at the regional scale and fed directly into regional planning exercises. In addition, the methodology had to be accurate, easy to use, cost effective, based on good science and able to be undertaken by CMA staff, Waterwatchers and others associated with natural resource management.

Data for Hydrology, Water Quality and Aquatic Life are collected as part of an existing statewide data collection network and does not require any further data collection through the ISC program. However, the Physical Form and Streamside Zone data is required to be collected by CMAs throughout the state.

How to collect ISC field data?

The current method for collecting the Physical Form and Streamside Zone sub-index data is through the use of field data sheets (link to PDF). This data is then entered into this online database for storage.

The ISC is moving towards the use of Personal Digital Devices (more information) (PDAs) for the collection of field data. This will remove the need to enter data manually into the online database, as uploading of data will be automatic.

Currently trials are under way for the introduction of PDA technology into the ISC and other monitoring programs across DSE. The PDA technology should be available before the 2007 round of sentinel site data collection.

Resources for field data collection

A List of equipment that is required to be taken in to the field is available in the ISC User’s Manual (2nd edition). This User’s Manual details the steps required to complete an assessment. Please contact the ISC project managers if you require a hard copy of any of these publications. Field data sheets are also available here, or can be photocopied from the ISC User’s Manual (2nd edition)

Riparian EVCs can be sourced from the EVC website.
